Family Halloween Costumes So Good You’ll Wish You Were Part of Them

Halloween is a time to show off your family’s spirit, sometimes literally, sometimes in full costume glory. It’s when parents, kids, and even pets commit to a theme so hard that strangers start asking what movie it’s from.

The costumes were so spot-on, I thought it was a promo for a new Addams Family movie. Wednesday stole the spotlight, holding that perfect glare for days after Halloween, while Cousin It, their 11-year-old under all that hair, powered through the heat for the sake of the photo. This next Addams Family Halloween shot nailed the casting, Gomez, Morticia, and a “Wednesday” played by their furiously unimpressed cat. Dressed in a DIY black sweatshirt with a felt collar, I feel like she is angry at everyone. Apparently, it’s tradition; last year, she was an equally grumpy Louise from Bob’s Burgers.

Dad u/oligarchyoligarchy is a dead ringer for Linguini, right down to the face. Their “Little Chef” steals the spotlight, just like Remy in Ratatouille. It had me double-checking that it wasn’t a scene from a live-action remake.

What if you need a girl for a cosplay but only have your dog? You pull a Dirty Dancing and cast her as Jennifer Grey. This guy went full Patrick Swayze, hair and smolder included, while his pup nailed the “Baby” role with perfect pose and tragic-romance eyes. By u/Atxflyguy83

I saw this adorable post with a baby dressed as a Mandrake from Chamber of Secrets, complete with a flowerpot “planter” and earmuff-wearing parents in full Professor Sprout gear. The mom (annamarie_bro) said he only cried for a few seconds because the party was past his bedtime, but the timing made the photo perfect. And the whole family costume was so adorable, it even made the local news

If you’ve ever wanted to see Jim Henson and his Muppets come to life, this family went all in with dad as Henson (bonus points for sneaking in khakis), the kids as Kermit, Miss Piggy, and an Animal so good he could headline a drum solo. The costumes were handmade, each character photographed separately, then photoshopped together so everyone looks perfectly posed.

Here’s a Spaceballs Halloween idea that’s perfect for a family of four. Dress one kid as Barf with floppy ears and a tan jumpsuit, the other as Dot Matrix with gold face paint and a “Virgin Alarm.” Mom can go all out as Princess Vespa with big hair and a tiara, while dad rocks the easy Lone Starr look with jeans, boots, and a leather jacket. It’s funny, easy to recognize, and gets the whole family in on a classic movie joke. By u/wife2ezmoney

By year four, this family had built a full tradition, four straight Halloweens of elaborate, homemade group costumes.

Year 1 was Oompa Loompas, Year 2 the Ronald McDonald clan. They actually went to McDonald’s in costume (no free fries, sadly). Year 3 golden “human trophies,” and Year 4 a spooky Beetlejuice theme. Each set was crafted with wild attention to detail, wigs, face paint, props, and costumes tailored to fit everyone, parents included. What makes it even better is the kids were all in every year, genuinely excited to keep the streak going. It’s equal parts wholesome family bonding and impressive DIY skills.

u/noahbodty post a themed family costume where each member dressed as a character from Scooby-Doo, with the parents as Shaggy and Scooby, and the kids filling in the rest of the gang. They staged and posed it for a polished group shot (reportedly photographed separately and then composited), but at its core, it’s still a Halloween family costume,  just done at a higher production level than most.

On a Disney Halloween cruise, this family of four went full Avengers, complete with Captain America, Black Widow, Spider-Man, and Doctor Strange. The standout? Doctor Strange’s insanely detailed, handmade robe and cloak, courtesy of Grandma, yes, she sews these herself just for the grandkids. By u/ddoriguzzi

This family’s Día de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) look instantly reminded me of Coco,  the sugar skull makeup was so detailed, the marigolds popped like they were glowing, and the outfits felt like high fashion. Credits go to u/Granjaguar

Neil Patrick Harris and David Burtka never miss with their Halloween game, but the year they did Star Wars? Legendary. Han Solo and Obi-Wan were on point, but the real scene-stealers were their twins,  Luke Skywalker looking like a born performer and Princess Leia rocking enough sass to run the entire Rebellion. Honestly, I wouldn’t mess with her; that kid looked like she meant business. Post on Reddit

I’d vote for this kid in a heartbeat. He rolled up to Halloween as a mini presidential candidate. The cardboard setup was spot-on, his serious little face sold it, and people joked he already had more maturity (and bigger hands) than some actual candidates. Honestly, it might be the only politician everyone could agree on. By u/Can_confirm_am_liar

Here’s another kid with dad family Halloween costume, with baby boy riding in looking ready to address the nation on a strict platform of naps and snacks. Thanks u/butterscotcheggs for posting this.

That “American Pandemic, 2020” card is such a perfect time capsule, like if American Gothic had survived 90 years just to find Clorox, masks, and socially distanced sass waiting for them. The detail of quarantining the original farmer and his daughter in the window was chef’s-kiss clever, and the empty spray bottle is practically a relic from the Great Lysol Shortage. Honestly, it’s equal parts art project, historical document, and “we survived 2020” badge of honor.
